Beeple’s $70 million art sale changed my life forever.
No, I didn’t become an NFT mogul.
Here’s what happened:
March 2021. Twitter explodes when Beeple sells his piece “The First 5,000 Days” for more than $69 million to a mysterious buyer. I’m bewildered along with everyone else. “How could a JPEG possibly be worth that?”
The buyer? Anonymous avatar “Metakovan.” No one knows his true identity. Then finally he agrees to an interview with CNBC. The world learns he’s a 26-year-old crypto billionaire in India. One line of his flattens me.
Interviewer: “So why exactly was “5,000 Days” worth nearly $70 million to you?”
Metakovan: “Time is the one thing that can’t be hacked. You can’t hack time.”
That day, I record and publish my first Chinese video. And I don’t stop. Three years later, I’ve published more than 1,300 videos on my channel, all 100% in Mandarin. Speeches. Vocab reviews. Podcasts. Vlogs.
My first video was 3 minutes. The first few hundred were all short. Daily updates or Chinese lesson recaps.
Then, on December 22, 2022, I publish a much longer speech in Chinese. And again the next day. And the next day, and the next. I never stop.
For 517 consecutive days, I’ve published a daily longform Chinese video, 20-30+ minutes each. I give a speech or spiel on whatever topic I’d like, using the latest vocab I’ve learned. Someday next decade I’ll hit Beeple’s epic milestone. I’m never going to stop.
But for now, here’s my masterpiece. I call it “Chinese: The First 500 Days.”
